The saga of India's nuclear submarine

Nuclear submarine capable for carrying and lauching nuclear warhead are considered the most effective nuclear warhead launching platforms. India recognizes it's need in navy in 1970 with Prime Minister Indira Gandhi asking BARC, DRDO and other research and development organizations to develop such vessels for navy.

In 1990, the project starts working on submarine (vessel) under secret Advanced Technology Vessel (ATV) project.

On 26th July 2009, India gets it's first such vessel weight around 6000 tonnes in Vizag sea waters for tests.

13th August 2013, 83 MW submarine reactor goes critical in INS Arihant.

December 2014, INS Arihant is ready for trials for next 18 months with test firings of K-15 missiles.
